Great Wall

Yikes its 2:30 AM and I can't sleep. My counter says we leave for China in 20 days! That means that more than likely I will be standing on the Great Wall of China in 22 or 23 days! Next to getting Abby that is the second thing that I am most excited about. I can't wait!!! The whole idea is just so surreal. I have heard that when climbing the great wall you can go left or right. I read that left was harder but less crowded too. It is just now hitting me that I am afraid of heights. For those of you that have been there, is that something I need to factor in or are the sides of the wall pretty high? I will climb it regardless :) I googled images of the Great Wall and found these pictures. I think that the last three snow covered pictures are very cool. I know there is snow over there now too. I also know that know matter what it will be darn cold too!

On another note, My little girl is 13 months old today! At least I know that I should have her in my arms for her 14 month birthday :)

I can't wait to see the Great Wall next year! If only someone could promise me we'd be seeing our little one next year?!!

Hope its not too chilly for you in China!

It's not all that tall. In fact, I was most impressed at how short it was, yet it still managed to be a major defense tool for the country back pre-technology. The part where you climb is pretty gentle. Well, the actual steps are hugely high and rough on the knees, but I didn't get a dizzy, scared-of-heights feeling at all.

Happy 13 months Miss Abby!

We didn't end up going to the most popular section of the Great Wall because traffic was so bad on the day we went. We went to a less visited part. I climbed a little, but I had been sick and decided not to climb too much. Those steps are STEEP! And as you go up, they get more steep.

It is an amazing experience though. You will love it and never forget it!

Go back to blogs that have already been to China and look at their great wall pix. You can judge how tall the sides are where you walk by the people standing there. It's a good thing we are going there first because it will take all our reserve to do it I'm sure. I can't wait. Happy birthday little one. xo Mom

No you don't realize you are climbing that high since it is going up a mountain anyway. It was raining and crowded when we were there so the steps were slick and uneven. You will be amazed because of the builing of it, the age, seeing where the soldiers feet have made the bricks smooth over time.

Bring a lock that you can lock and throw away the key. Lovers do that and the only way the love can be broken is to break the lock. Rather symbolic of your forever family and I wished I had known about it before going and I would have taken my own "family lock".

I'm scared of heights, too.
But I plan on doing a happy dance on top of the Great Wall since it took me so damn long to get there!
LOL!

I love the pics of the Great Wall. It's the one thing I didn't get to see when I was in China that I MOST wanted to see, but we didn't go to Beijing. I went on a mission trip in 1999.

Of course, Abby is the best part of your trip!!

I'm like you. The second most exciting thing to me, aside from meeting my daughter is climbing the Great Wall. I may not get far but it's all about the experience.

It won't be long now friend...yeah!!!

My husband is not fond of heights either but he was fine on the Great Wall. The walls on each side are high.
The steps are very steep so you'll need to hang on to the rails on your way down :)

I never felt like we were very high on the Wall, I think you'll be fine. I think I remember the cold more than anything! It was chilly up there (especially to this native Texan). :)

Can't wait to see pics of you on the Wall! It won't be long now!

So close!!

Question, have you done any long airplane flights (like 6+ hours)?? If not I'd definitely suggest bringing some dramamine in your carryon. I used it on my recent trip to Denmark.

I'd never had a problem with flying but I'd only gone on 3-4 hour flights before and by the time I hit the 6 hour mark my tummy wasn't liking me so much. I took some dramamine that a friend had recommended that I bring and all was good after that! =) Especially when we hit some turbulence coming into Boston.

Just wanted to suggest it to you too. Have a great weekend!!
